A Brief Sojourn Into The Wilderness - Day 2 at Cardigan

Day 2 - Theme of Regions

October 2nd, 2017

We woke up in the morning of October 2nd, 2017, and blundered around, with a lot of moaning and groaning involved, as well as a fair share of screaming, then went downstairs for a breakfast of bacon, eggs, hashbrowns, juice, and fruit. Then I met with my group and we started our hike to Cardigan. We began in a region of human population. There were roads, or really, road, singular, porta potties, fields, Teslas, Volkswagens, and all manners of vehicles. The Lodge itself dominated the scene. As we hiked, the region of human population gave way to the hardwood zone of the forest, which is another region, a region of hardwood trees. We stopped at a ring of birch stumps to discuss different types of relationships - mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism. The stumps were placed there, and the signs at the forks in the trail and the blazes told us that we hadn't totally escaped the region of humans. We continued for a while in this hardwood zone, stopping to play a pencil hiding game. Only as we neared the top did the zone transform into the boreal zone, a region of spruce and pine trees. This zone passed quickly as we clambered between the stunted trees. We stopped at an outlook called PJ's Ledge, and we could see the differing colors of the trees in the separate regions below us. This is an image of the view sitting on the bench on that ledge.

From there, we hiked onto the bald rock summit where we stopped and ate lunch in the region of bare rock. Rachelle passed out extra cookies for us all. After lunch, we hiked downwards, passing through the regions that circled the mountain. Many hours after we embarked, we happened upon the region of human population once again. We collapsed on a region of open, mowed grass and discussed our trip. Once that arduous task was finished, we were dismissed to flop lifelessly into our bunks. We ate a dinner of delicious lasagna in the region of the tables and food preparation, then went to have a campfire in the region of the mowed field. We performed skits and sing-alongs, and all manners of ridiculous things. We tromped inside and listened to some stories in the region of the sitting area, then at 10 or so, we were shooed off to go to bed in the region of the bunkrooms. Everything we did that day involved some kind of region, whether it was a huge, general region like the boreal zone, or a more specific region like the mowed field, or a very specific region like the bunkroom of 201.

Below is an image of some of the regions of Cardigan.

MAP

Below is map from Day 2, created on arcGIS.com, including a track of the path which we walked, as well as the Cardigan Region Forest Boundaries and several waypoints, which unfortunately have not been named aptly, but oh well.

This is a topographical, or contour, map that shows the varying levels of altitude. The closer the lines are to each other, the steeper the slope. The farther the lines are from each other, the flatter the plain.
