October 4/6 2017 Location The latitude of cardigan mountain is 43.6498 degrees N, 71.9148 degrees W. The elevation is 3,156ft. Cardigan is in the town of Orange NH. Cardigan is NW of Concord. Cardigan is near Enfield It was sunny. It was hilly and rocky. There was a lodge It was a hour bus ride from Hopkinton.
Place: Summit of Cardigan Mountain 10/5/17 We climbed to the summit of Cardigan after we did Firscrew. The summit was bald and getting to the peak was hard and steep. It was a beautiful day sunny, mid 60s to 70s very few clouds. It was windy. The foliage was pretty but the leaves were not super bright. We had a view of 360 degrees. We could see Franconia Notch we could also see Newfound Lake. The elevation at the top of Cardigan is 3118FT
Fire tower on Cardigan Mountain: Mr. Simpkins who works for NH Forestry division had a key to fire tower. We were one of the first groups up in it. He showed us the fire plotter, a circular instrument with compass bearings on it. The fire spotter locates the direction of the fire on the instrument and tells the two other towers. With three bearings they can triangulate and figure out where the fire is located. The tower has been in use since 1924. This is one of the seventeen still standing and active fire towers in New Hampshire. We were there for three days Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
