Day 2

Day 2 was the only full day at Mount Cardigan Lodge and was the day we hiked Mount Cardigan and Firescrew. While we were hiking the mountains, we passed through many regions of the forest. One of them being the Boreal zone. The boreal zone contains conifers, most commonly the black and the white spruce tree and balsam firs. Deciduous trees are also common, like the white birch and the aspen. Often times, you could find "old man's beard" a stringy pale green lichen that clung to trees and hung from the branches. Soil is rather poor in nutrients so Laura our AMV guide told us that we were not aloud to urinate in this zone. She suggested we pee in a plastic bag that she had carried. Another region in that we noticed on our hike was the Alpine zone. Most trees in this zone were evergreens. We were told this time to try to avoid walking on the mossy lichen stuff that grew on the rocks for it took a very long time to grow. This lichen resembles coral and snaps easily.
