~Information About the Three Island Groups~

Cuba is the largest of all the islands in the Caribbean.

Christopher Columbus discovered Puerto Rico in 1493, one year after he discovered the Americas.

There are around 700 islands in the Bahamas, of which only around 30 are inhabited.

Jamacia is prone to damage caused by hurricanes.

Who: Most of the people decsended from African slaves or as Spanish, French, British, and Dutch colonists

What: The West Indies are a crescent-shaped variety of islands, about 2,000 miles long seperating the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.

When: 145 million years ago, in the Cretacous Period, the West Indies Region was formed by a line of folded and faulted mountains. This arrangment is now, currently submerged under the ocean. Although you can see bits of it still standing and above sea level, known as the Blue Mountains of Jamaica.

Where: The West Indies; Greater & Lesser Antillean Islands. South of Florida, U.S and north of South America.

Why: Most of the West Indies were cut down for firewood to heat their refining vats. This resulted in soil & improvishment erosion.
