The Voyage of Columbus

Three Vocabulary Words:

1. Mooring- To secure a ship in a particular place by ropes, chains, etc.

2.Helmsmen- A person who steers a ship.

3.Sovereign- A monarch; King, Queen, or other supreme leader.

Summary: Columbus and his three ships the Pinta, Santa Maria, and Nina are trying to sail from europe to Asia to prove the world is 1,900 miles round. He sails for the Spanish king and Queen. First, they sail south to the canary islands. They stopped in the Canary islands for several days and switched the nina's Lateen sails for square sails to move faster. Some beleive that Columbus and the governer of Gomera, Beatriz de Peraza fancied each other. Columbus and his crew sailed out of sight of the Canaries on September 9.
