The Voyages of Columbus (by Lorenzo Camusso)
Mooring: A place where a boat/ship is tied up
Nautical: Concerning sailing and/or sailors and navigation (of the sea)
Hemp: A cannabis plant grown for it's fiber, which can be used to make rope.
On the third of August, 1492, Columbus and his crew gathered and began their voyage west to what they hoped was Asia. After they had sailed down along the coast, the men set a course for the Canaries, the westernmost Spanish territory, to take on supplies. However, it was evident that Columbus had a love interest there as well. So, following trade winds they made their way towards the Canaries. However, on August 6th, Columbus was furious when he found out the Pinta had a damaged rudder, and suspected sabotage. In the end, he hanged one of the crew members. Moving on, when they finally got there, the boat had to wait for two weeks out in open water before it could come into the port. In the meantime though, Columbus had gone to Gomera to request that the Nina’s triangle sail be replaced with square ones, for more efficiency. After a long wait, the ships finally pulled into San Sebastián Bay in Gomera. This normally 8-10 day trip had taken a month at this point. When Columbus pulled anchor on September 6, the water was dead calm. Then trade winds started to pick up, and at 3:00 am (September 9th), the ships moved out and the Canaries disappeared behind them, their last bit of land before a harsh trip.
