Blue Group
Day 2 at Cardigan! Human Environment Interaction-
On Day 2, October 2nd, we woke up, got dressed, and went downstairs for breakfast. Breakfast was scrambled eggs, bacon, muffins, and fresh fruit. It was delicous! After breakfast, we packed up are bags which had to hold are sketch book, pencils, ran gear, extra clothing, and your lunch. We met are groups in a certain spot and we started to hike. Are group decided to climb Mt. Firescrew and then Cardigan. Some groups did just Cardigan, but all the groups had to climb Cardigan. So we decided to start with Firescrew because there was a pretty stream that we wanted to see and are group was pretty fast hikers so we wanted to give are selfs a challenge.
When we started up Firescrew it was really steep we had to take a lot of breaks. We took a couple tests and did a lot of drawings. When we were close to the top we saw a lot of things called cairns. Cairns are basically rocks that are stacked up on top of eachother forming a small pyramid. Humans make them just to show that they were able to climb the mountain. That is called Human Environment Interaction You can find them on a lot of mountains. When we got to the top of the mountain we took a break and had lunch which was a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich. It was delicous. When we were done eating are lunch it started hailing so we knew we had to keep moving. We quickly put on are rain gear and then started the hike to are destination, Cardigan Mountain. The hike only took a half and hour because the mountains are so close together. But all the sudden we realized the adults were not close to us anymore. We could not see them. We went back to where we were and we learned that Mrs. I’s knee popped out and Mr. Behner had to pop it back in. So, she was just getting her barrings again. Finally, we kept on moving. When we got there we all imediatly got are sketchbooks out and started sketching the beautiful view and the firetower. Then are group member Killion started explaining a story about why the firetower is there and why there are no trees on the summit.
In the 1800’s there were a big pack of wolves and people were scared of climbing the summit because of the wolves. So they decided to something about it. They lit the whole summit on fire! That scared the wolves away or killed them. But the only problem is, is that the trees that they burned down never grew back. So they decided to put a fire tower up.
We all thought that that was really cool that there was a fire right where we were standing! When we were all done sketching we decided to start heading down. The trail we went down was super super steep and people kept on falling. We decided to go down a ski trail and that ended up being even more steep. Noah slipped and fell. He skinned his knee pretty badly and Killion had to stop and bandage it up. Mrs. I, and my mom kept going with all the kids. All the sudden we realized that we did not know where we were. We decided to follow a trail that we reconized and hoped it was the right one. We were going along fine, and then all the sudden Brittney fell down and hit her head on a rock. She got up and told us that her head really hurt. We made sure that she did not cut herself and then kept on going. All the sudden we heard people talking. We all started running. Then we saw Mr. Woolner. We ran to him and explained the whole situation. He brought us over to the side of the trail and we waited for everyone else. When they got there we kept on walking down the trail and we finally got back to the lodge.
When we got in the lodge we changed out of are wet clothes and then went back downstairs. Like yesterday, there was a lot of hair braiding, board games, and talking. When dinner was ready my group had to set the table up. That last night was sloppy joes, pulled pork, and ice cream sundaes for dessert! After dinner we had a little more free time and then we had a campfire outside. At the campfire, we sang songs, acted out little clips and had a wonderful time. But all the sudden it started to pour and we all had to go inside. So we had a short campfire! But it was still very fun!
After that we went into are bunk rooms and went to bed!
