During our second day at Cardigan we spent a lot of time outdoors and we learned so much. I woke up early in the morning because I couldn't sleep. For breakfast we had bacon, eggs, and muffins. We had a little time to socialize with friends before we got ready for our hike. We got our daybacks ready and made sure to put lots of layers on, I still had no idea just how cold it would be though. We met up with our hiking groups in our meeting areas and talked about where and what we would be doing that day. My group was going to hike up Firescrew and then from Fire Screw we would go up to Cardigan. We then set off, we sketched a few times and made sure to take lots of water breaks, as we hiked. Eventually the trail got pretty steep and you had to be careful where you stepped so you would not trip over roots or rocks. Once we got a good amount of the way up Fire Screw we stopped for a lunch break. I had a sandwich and some snacks from the other day. It started to get cold so I put on my coat, hat, and even gloves. Even though I was really cold the view was amazing and just kept getting better. All the trees had turned beautiful oranges, yellows, and reds. You could also see a huge lake. We kept going and it got steeper and steeper. On our way up the mountain we saw tons of other hikers that came from all over just to come hike up Cardigan. Eventually the trail turned to bare rock and whenever we thought we were at the top of Firescrew we still had to keep going. By the time we got to the top of Firescrew I was freezing, and the cardigan still looked just as far away as it did before, but we kept going. The wind whipped my face and I knew that my cheeks were probably bright pink. It got very steep and my legs ached, but finally we made it. The wind was so strong I thought I was going to fall over. We saw the fire tower and sat down to have a snack and sketch the view. We could see the loge and it looked so tiny. However we had to start going back down. On the way back we sketched some more and I got much warmer. The hike was all downhill so it was pretty easy. Finally we got back to the loge, we met with our groups and then had some free time before we had hamburgers for dinner. We got to have cookies for dessert and for our night activity we had a campfire and got to perform skits. Along with that we got to look at the stars and even saw some shooting stars. Once we got inside, Mr. Woolner read us a story and then we were finally able to go to sleep. Overall, our second day at Cardigan was really fun and taught us how to perceive.
Our second day at Cardigan was filled with so many great times and it reminded me of Movement, one of the five themes of geography. The definition of movement could be the travel of people, ideas, and things, from one place to another. Some examples of movement were all of the hikers we saw on the trail, they came from other places to come and hike up Cardigan Mountain, and then they would leave. Another example would be the food that we had. That food came from a different place and wound up at AMC where we got to eat it. Along with that all of the different plants we saw at Cardigan didn't originate from New hampshire, but somehow they wound up here and now we are so lucky to have them. One last example would be the idea to build handicapped trails.
