On day one of the Cardigan field trip my group did the Welton Falls/waterfall hike. When we first arrived we unloaded our luggage from the back of the truck and went inside. Then, we had a meeting in the lunch room while eating our lunches. After that we went up to our rooms and got dressed for the hike. We had a small meet with our instructors and our group, then we left the lodge and made our way down the trail. Along the way we made various sketches of different things. Everytime we made a sketch, we labeled the latitude and longitude along with the elevation of that area. Our group crossed many rivers heading toward our destination. One river had rocks we had to jump across. Eventually, we arrived and began to observe the water and the organisms depending on it. We tested the water with another group, and looked for signs of life. The test was to see if the Welton Fall's ecosystem was healthy. After finishing up at the waterfall we began to hike back from where we came from. Just after we arrived back from the hike, we ate dinner. Afterwards, we had time to shower, and time to unpack. Unexpectedly, we were called outside for a night activity. Everyone gathered outside and we talked about our surroundings, and how we depend on nature and how nature depends on us. When we got back inside Mr. Woolner read us a couple stories before we were sent to bed to rest for the next day.
Movement is a theme of geography. People, things, and ideas move across the earth, both to and from. An example of movement from our cardigan trip is the Welton Falls water fall we saw. We also tested the water. It is an example of movement because the water is constantly flowing down from one place to another. Another example is all the baggage we brought up the AMC Lodge. Our bags carried our water bottles, rain coat, rain pants, gloves, hiking shoes, socks, and clothing. Also, the GPSs were brought up to the lodge by Mr. Woolner and were carried up and down the mountain taking waypoints. Also, plants like the Scotch Pine being taken to another part of the world is an example of movement.
