Our first day at Cardigan we did a series of things. After a long bus ride there, we arrived with much excitement. However, at first we were not yet allowed inside the lodge because the workers were not done preparing for our arrival. So to pass the time, the councilors there, after introducing themselves, engaged us in many different activities to get us moving. We played games for about half an hour before we were allowed inside the lodge. When they announced that we were able to go inside, we gathered our belongings before entering the lodge and dumping our stuff in the mud room. Then we proceeded to the dining area for an orientation and snack break. After orientation, they separated us into our hiking groups, had us put our luggage in our rooms and change for the upcoming hike. Then directed us to our hiking groups meeting place. Once meeting our group's councilor, Heidi, we went outside to play a couple games and do a quick sketch of the building before heading off on our first hike, the Nature Trail. The Nature Trail was a mile walk and we were able to fit in another snack break along the way. After completing the Nature Trail, Heidi brought us to our next destination, a camping spot. We utilized this area by doing a compass course and learning about the scenery around us. We also managed to fit in 18 sketches throughout our whole hike. Once headed back to the lodge, we had a fair amount of free time before dinner. Then, after dinner, we finished off the night by playing games outside and listening to a story told by Mr. Woolner.

Movement

The first day at Cardigan, we experienced many things that related to movement, a theme of geography. For example, the multiple AMC councilors came from all over the country. Heidi, my group councilor, came from California and is currently traveling around the world. In addition to that, the old, rusted car that we saw atop the ski slope, was somehow moved from the base of the mountain, to the top. The car also could have come from some other place before its final destination at Cardigan. Other examples of movement are the food that they served - it comes from all different places, the apple tree that sits by the pond - apple trees don't grow there, meaning someone had to bring and plant it there, and us. We are an example of movement too! We moved from Hopkinton all the way to Cardigan Mountain.
