Location: Cardigan Mountain

There are two ways to describe the location of Mt. Cardigan, relative, and absolute. Relative would give you the location of the area around cardigan, while the absolute location will be in latitude and longitude, and will give you certain points on Mt. Cardigan. An example of relative location would be: the summit of Mt. Cardigan, is north of the summit of South Peak. Another example could be: The base of the trail to Mt. Cardigan is east of Rimrock Peak, or east northeast of Mt. Cardigan.

There are many different points of absolute location on the peak of Mt. Cardigan, for example 43 degrees, 38 minutes 58.3 seconds N, 71 degrees, 54 minutes 50.8 seconds W. A few examples of absolute location: the solar panels at the AMC lodge-43 degrees 38 minutes 58.6 seconds N, 71 degrees, 52 minutes 38.8 seconds W, a pond with many tadpoles-43 degrees, 38 minutes 57.9 seconds N, 71 degrees, 52 minutes 42.3 seconds W, and a stream with a large log through it-43 degrees, 38 minutes 54.4 seconds N, 71 degrees, 52 minutes 34.1 seconds W.

Place: Cardigan Mountain

Mt. Cardigan can be described as a place in different ways, two of which are cultural and physical geography. If you were to describe Mt. Cardigan using physical geography, you could describe it as the mountain that has a bald top, but lots of forest below it. It also has many glacial erratics, and other large boulders. All of the forests on Mt. Cardigan are relatively new, and as you rise elevations, the tree species become limited to evergreens, and few other species. Mt. Cardigan is a mountain that has many streams and ponds, and even waterfalls at the base of it, which is unique. A mile away from the trailhead is a large waterfall, and different, beautiful streams and brooks.

If you were to describe Mt. Cardigan using cultural geography, you could describe it as the mountain with the tall fire tower on top of it. It could also be the mountain that has yellow trail markers and kairns all over the trails. At the base there is a very large lodge, and a parking lot. It also has a pond with a deck in the middle of it, presumably for swimming. On the trail up Mt. Cardigan are old cellars from early homes, with trees growing inside of the pits, which have rock walls and rocks inside.

Our Days at Cardigan

We were at Cardigan for 3 days. On Sunday, we arrived and did a small hike to a stream, and around a pond. We learned about movement that day. On the second day, Monday, we hiked 4 different mountains. They were Firescrew, Cardigan, Rimrock, and South Peak, then we had a campfire, and created skits. That day we learned about human environment interaction. On Tuesday, we hiked across streams to Welton Falls, and we learned about region. Then we went home.
